Journey Inward

About the Artwork

The Story

Created in New York City, Journey Inward was inspired by the crystals and minerals at the American Museum of Natural History. Their intricate formations became an imagined landscape, where a lone figure stands before towering, luminous crystals.

I painted the figure from life while working alongside Steven Assael, one of my favorite artists in NYC. We lit the model with warm and cool light, and I heightened the colors in the surrounding minerals to create a glowing effect. The title invites viewers to imagine this crystalline world as a place of inner exploration.

Materials & Framing

This painting was created with archival oil paint on museum-grade canvas. The canvas was carefully prepared with several layers of gesso to create an exceptionally smooth surface, allowing for delicate details, subtle transitions, and luminous passages of color.

The canvas is stretched over substantial, gallery-depth stretcher bars measuring 1.5 inches deep. The edges are painted white for a clean, contemporary presentation, giving the painting a beautifully finished appearance from every angle. It arrives ready to hang and can be displayed elegantly without a frame.
